Audiences have yet to see how Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) will fare in Marvel's upcoming adaptation of The Avengers, but the studio is already planning the superhero's next adventure with 2013's Iron Man 3.
For the third installment, writer-director Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) will take over the director's chair from Jon Favreau — who helmed the two previous Iron Man movies — in what has been described as the start of "phase two" of the Marvel cinematic Universe. Downey Jr. has admitted to reading the Iron Man 3 script, written by Black and Drew Pearce (The Runaways), and said it was "the best I've read in five years".
During an interview with Access Hollywood, Don Cheadle, who played Lt. James "Rhodey" Rhodes, a.k.a War Machine, in Iron Man 2, revealed that he too has seen "a version of the script" and said that audiences should expect an even "more action-packed" Iron Man movie.
It's a lot more...it's more action-packed, it's a lot more fun. I think the interplay between Robert's character and my character is a lot more dynamic. So, I'm looking forward to it.
Downey Jr. is also looking forward to the sequel, recently admitting to Omelette (via Collider) that he thinks Iron Man 3 could be "one of the better superhero movies that’s ever been made".
I think that we have an opportunity with the third Iron Man to make the best of the three, and maybe one of the better superhero movies that’s ever been made. But I think we have to remember what made the first one good. It was very character-driven. It was very odd. It was kind of outrageous. And so I think we have to have the courage to trust that the audience is really kind of cool, and smart.
Plot details on Iron Man 3 have been thin so far. Reportedly, Tony Stark will be fighting "real world villains" in a "Tom Clancy-style thriller", and Black has promised that the villain will be one that "fanboys will appreciate." As for when Iron Man 3 will start lensing, Cheadle said last June that production will likely start in February, though a start date has yet to be publicly announced.
